Selling on BartaBase

Turn what you have into what you want

Sell for cash, swap for something else, or give it away. Getting set up takes about fifteen minutes, most of which is verification, and once you are approved you can list straight away.

Create an account What you will need
Before you start

Have these to hand

Verification is the one part you cannot skip, so it is worth gathering these first. Sellers who start without them tend to stop halfway.

A government-issued ID International passport, driver's licence, voter's card, or NIN slip or card. Any one of these is enough. It must be current, and the whole document needs to be in the photo.
A recent photo of yourself Taken now, not a picture from your gallery. We check it against the photo on your ID, so face the camera in good light with nothing covering your face.
A working phone number In full international format — +234 followed by your number without the leading zero. Buyers use it to coordinate pickups.
Your settlement account The bank account your money is paid into. We verify it live while you type, so the name on the account must match your own — a third party's account will not pass.
Why we ask for all this. Buyers hand over money before they hold the item. Verification is what makes that reasonable — it is the difference between a marketplace and a noticeboard. It also means a buyer cannot vanish on you.
Getting set up

Five steps, about fifteen minutes

1

Create your account

Name, email, password. Verify the email link we send you — check your spam folder if it does not arrive within a few minutes.

2

Apply to sell

A short guided form. You will upload a profile photo, your ID, and take a live selfie for the face check. Your phone number is confirmed by a code.

Take the photos in daylight if you can. Blurry or cropped ID pictures are far and away the most common reason an application comes back.

3

Add your settlement account

Pick your bank and enter the account number. We check it against the bank while you type and show you the account name that comes back — if that is not you, the details are wrong.

This is where every payout goes, so it is worth reading twice.

We review it

A person looks at your application. We aim to have most decisions back within a day or two, and you will get an email either way.

If something is not right, the email says what — you fix that one thing and resubmit rather than starting again.

You will be emailed the decision

Start selling

Approved sellers can list immediately. There is nothing else to wait for.

When you have a moment, open My Store in your dashboard and set up your storefront — name, banner, description. Buyers do look, and a store that has clearly been set up sells more than one that has not.

Your listings

Listing something well

A listing is doing one job: helping someone decide without holding the item. Everything below follows from that.

Let the AI draft it

Describe the item in a sentence and BartaBase AI writes the listing — title, description, category, a suggested price based on what similar things actually sell for here.

Always read it before publishing. It writes from what you told it, so if you left out the scratch on the lid, so will it — and that scratch is what causes the dispute later.

Or write it yourself

Say what it is, what condition it is in, and what is included.

  • Brand, model, size, colour
  • How old it is and how much use it has had
  • Any fault, mark or missing part
  • What comes with it — charger, box, receipt
  • Where you are, and whether you can deliver

Photos

Natural light, plain background, several angles. Photograph the flaws too — a visible scratch in the listing is a detail; the same scratch discovered on delivery is a refund.

  • The whole item, straight on
  • Any damage, close up
  • Labels, serial numbers, sizes
  • What is included, laid out together

One short video

You can add a single video of up to 15 seconds. Use it for the thing a photo cannot show: that the machine runs, the zip works, the screen has no dead pixels.

A quick walk around the item in good light does more for a buyer's confidence than any amount of description.

Be accurate rather than flattering. Listings that oversell get more clicks and more disputes, and disputes cost you the sale, the time and your rating. An honest listing sells to the right person first time.
Review

What holds a listing up

New listings get a quick check before they go live — usually well within a day. These are the things that send one back.

Photos taken from the internet We check for this. Use your own photos of the actual item, even for something brand new in a box.
Photos too dark or blurred to judge If a reviewer cannot tell what it is, neither can a buyer.
Contact details in the listing No phone numbers or social handles in the description. Taking a deal off BartaBase removes the buyer's protection and your own — if the money never came through us, we cannot help either of you.
The wrong category, or a vague title "Nice shoes" will not be found by anyone searching for what you have.
Anything you are not allowed to sell Counterfeits, stolen goods, weapons, medication, live animals, and anything else restricted by law. The Terms of Service has the full list.
Getting paid

How the money works

BartaBase holds the buyer's payment until they confirm the item arrived. That protects them — and it protects you, because a buyer cannot take the item and then reverse the payment.

1

The buyer pays BartaBase

You will see the order marked paid. That is your signal to ship or arrange the handover. The money is real, it is just not yours yet.

2

You send the item

Update the order to Shipped, then Delivered. Once it is delivered you can attach proof — a photo, a receipt, a screenshot from the courier.

Attach it. Proof of delivery is what settles a dispute in your favour weeks later, and it takes ten seconds.

The buyer confirms, and it becomes yours

The order moves to awaiting settlement, and the payout goes to your settlement account. Your Finance page shows exactly what came in, what commission was taken, and what is still owed to you.

Commission: 10% capped at ₦10,000.00
Commission is 10% capped at ₦10,000.00 of the item value. It is charged at the rate in force when the order was placed, so an older order keeps its original rate even if the rate changes later. Delivery charges are handled separately and are not part of it. Every figure is itemised on your Finance page — nothing is taken that you cannot see.
Never accept payment outside BartaBase. If a buyer offers to transfer you directly, decline and tell us. We never held that money, so if they later claim they were defrauded there is nothing for us to point to — and if they simply do not pay, there is nothing for us to release.
Beyond selling

Two other things you can do here

Swap instead of selling

List what you have and what you want. The Barter Agent values both sides, finds people to trade with, and can even spot three-way swaps where no single person wants what you have.

Any balancing cash is held by BartaBase until both of you confirm the exchange happened, so nobody has to go first.

Give things away

List an item as free and people can register interest. You choose who gets it, arrange a pickup through the app, and both of you confirm the handover afterwards.

The confirmation matters: it builds a reliability record for the person collecting, which is what keeps no-shows down for everyone.

Day to day

Running your store

Orders

Every order in one place, with the buyer's details, what they paid, and what you will net. Update shipping from here and attach delivery proof.

Finance and Sales

What you have earned, what commission was taken, what is still awaiting settlement, and how each day compares to your own average. Export any of it to CSV or Excel.

My Store

Your storefront: name, banner, description, and everything you have listed. Worth ten minutes once, then leaving alone.

Stock

Quantities in one screen, so you are not selling something you have already shipped. Update it as you go.

Devices and Sessions

Everywhere your account is signed in. If you ever see something you do not recognise, sign out everywhere and change your password — in that order.

Help and Support

Ask the assistant, check whether anything is down, or raise a ticket with a person. More on that below.

When you need us

Getting help

Start with the assistant — it can see your own orders and payouts, so for "where is my money" it usually answers in seconds. When it cannot, raise a ticket.

1

Ask the support assistant

On the Help and Support page. It answers from your actual account: the status of your orders, what is awaiting settlement, whether your verification went through.

2

Check the system status

Also on that page, and it is live rather than decorative. If payouts or payments are having a bad morning, it says so — which saves you raising a ticket about something we already know about.

Raise a ticket

Pick a topic, describe what happened, and attach the order if it is about one. You can attach screenshots or a PDF receipt — up to five files.

You get a reference like BB-4F2A91 and an email confirming it. Replies arrive by email and are on your ticket page, and you can reply from there. We usually respond within a day.

A person reads every ticket
What helps us help you faster: the order number, what you expected, what actually happened, and anything you have already tried. A screenshot is worth a paragraph. Never include your password or a verification code — we will never ask for either.
Questions

The things sellers ask

Usually within a day or two. You will get an email either way. If it is taking noticeably longer than that, the system status on the Help and Support page will normally tell you why — and if it does not, raise a ticket.
Selling costs you 10% capped at ₦10,000.00 of the item value, taken only when an order completes — nothing up front, and nothing if it does not sell. Barter listings may carry a small listing fee, which is shown to you before you confirm.
Almost always the photo. Blurred, cropped, glare across the document, or a selfie that does not clearly match the ID. The email tells you which. Retake it in daylight with the whole document flat in frame and resubmit — you do not start over.
Once the buyer confirms they received the item, the order moves to awaiting settlement and is paid to your settlement account. Your Finance page shows what is waiting and what has already gone out. If something looks stuck for more than a couple of days, raise a ticket with the order number.
Message them first — most of the time they simply forgot. If you have attached delivery proof and they still do not respond, raise a ticket with the order number and we will look at it. This is exactly why attaching proof at the time matters.
Yes, from your seller profile. The new account is verified against the bank the same way, and the name still has to match yours. Change it before a payout runs rather than during, so there is no question about where money went.
No. Buyers pay before they hold the item, so we need to know who is on the other side of that. You can browse, buy and register interest in free items without it — selling is the part that needs verification.
Decline, and tell us. It is the single most common way people lose money here, and it cuts both ways — you lose the guarantee that you get paid at all. Raise a ticket under "Report fraud or abuse" with the listing and what they said.
